The number of calories you need each day is dependant on a couple different things. It’s going to vary based on your age, your gender, and how active you are. Active people will need more calories per day, and men generally need more calories than females do.
If you’re an active male between the ages of fifteen and thirty five, then you should be eating about 3,000 calories per day to ensure your body has enough nutrients to function properly. If you were an active female in the same age range, then you will need around 2,400 calories to maintain the same active lifestyle as a male.
According to the USDA, the minimum number of calories recommended is 1,000 and that’s for children at two years of age. So if you see a diet that recommends you take in that much or less, you can see how that could be dangerous. No matter how you look at it, your body needs more calories than a two year old does.
But what if you’re not leading an active lifestyle? Then how many calories should you be taking in? Again, for ages sixteen through forty, you should be taking in around 2,400 calories if you have a sedentary lifestyle rather than an active one. This is the number of calories an active female would need. So let’s see how many calories a sedentary female needs.
According to the USDA, a sedentary female older than eleven would need between 1,600 to 2,000 calories, considerably less than their male counterparts. The female body stays pretty stable once it hits puberty, though there is a spike in needed calorie intake during the ages of nineteen to twenty five, which would be considered a woman’s prime.
Before puberty, the average calories needed for males and females is actually pretty much the same. It’s not until puberty when boys begin to natrually become bigger and more muscular that they require more calories each day.
Remember, if you’re trying to lose weight, you need to make sure you’re burning off more calories than you’re eating. An active lifestyle may require 2,400 calories, but that’s how much your body will need to maintain its daily functions. You stil need to burn more than that if your goal is to lose weight.
You should also remember that it’s not just about the calories you intake. It’s also about how you intake those calories. 2,000 calories of salad is much healthier than 2,000 calories of French fries.
